José Rey Toledo, whose Towa name Sho-bah-won-hon, means Morningstar, was
born in Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico on June 28, 1915. His pueblo ancestral
lineage consists of clans whose responsibility is the perpetuation of traditional
arts and crafts. José states that this responsibility has influenced his
ability to observe human behavior and cultural activities, and his creative
expression. Through the medium of watercolor, he focuses upon the dramatic
expressions that characterize the emotional and spiritual involvement of
the participants in symbolic Indian ceremonial dance. He states, “I aspire
to record detailed portrayals of the action, costuming, and color of Indian
life.”
